Keeping up with literacy is so important over the summer to avoid the summer slump. Children’s minds don’t stop in the summer, they need to continue to learn but at the same time there’s no reason why we can’t make it even more fun.  Maybe you’d like to create literacy centers or use this packet for summer school, possibly send home with your students. I find that to keep children learning over the summer is easier when they think they’re only playing. That’s why I use these literacy centers throughout all sorts of summer activities.  Just like in the classroom with dramatic play,  one idea is to take these worksheets to the beach, on a field trip and use them right before an outdoor day. You can tape sight words on all the beach, pool and outdoor items you find. Incorporate props such as beach balls and pool floats for added play.  Summer review becomes summer fun and children won’t even realize they are doing work as if it were the school year. Ice cream also always helps make any situation better. You can incorporate the real thing into this literacy activity.
